The United States of America is a federation of states. Each state has a different court system. There is also a federal court system that covers the entire country. On matters involving state law and state constitutions, the Supreme Court of each state has the last word. However, the United States Supreme Court has the authority to review state court rulings on the meaning and application of the federal constitution and federal law.
