Limiting Your Company’s Liability For Serving Alcohol At Company Parties

Employers must decide whether to host a holiday party for employees, and if so, whether and how to serve alcohol at the party. Michael R. Frone, Ph.D., the principal investigator of a recent study of alcohol in the workplace, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol, has written: “Of all the psychoactive substances with the potential to impair cognitive and behavioral performance, alcohol is the most widely used and misused substance in the general population and in the workforce. The misuse of alcohol by employed adults is an important social policy issue with the potential to undermine employee productivity and safety.”
